Tehran asks UNESCO to register chovgan as Iranian game
The Iranian Vice President and head of the Organization for Cultural Heritage Masood Soltanifaray filed an application to UNESCO to register the game Polo (chovgan) as an Iranian sports game, IRNA agency reported.
Previously Azerbaijan filed a similar application, which caused objections of the Iranian side.
The game chovgan is one of the national games of Azerbaijan, as evidenced by the numerous artistic and historical sources. However, for many centuries, Iran and Azerbaijan were a single state, which makes common many aspects of the culture and history of the two countries.
