Consent to the deployment of Russian "peacekeepers" in Karabakh is a serious mistake

Baku/12.08.21/Turan: The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry warned Russia on August 11 that, contrary to the trilateral statement signed by the President of Azerbaijan, the President of Russia and the Prime Minister of Armenia on November 10, 2020, the Russian peacekeeping forces have not put an end to the deployment of the Armenian armed forces on the territories of Azerbaijan.

The same day, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Azerbaijan was invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and handed a note due to the illegal entry of Iranian trucks to Karabakh.

Arif Hajyly, the leader of the Musavat Party, told about these and other issues on the agenda in the program "Difficult Question".

According to him, these are belated actions. From the very beginning, the Azerbaijani side pursued a wrong policy. As a result of this policy, we are now in a rather difficult situation. How could the Armenian Armed Forces be deployed without the knowledge and participation of Russian "peacekeepers"?

The first point of the trilateral agreement was the withdrawal of the Armenian Armed Forces from the territory of Karabakh simultaneously with the deployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent there. Three hours after the announcement of this statement, "peacekeepers" were introduced onto the territory of Karabakh but the Armenian forces were not withdrawn from there.

As a matter of fact, this agreement proved to be the salvation of the Armenian armed forces. The capture of Khankendi was a matter of 3-4 hours, and as a result, the 20-22 thousand Armenian group would have been in the cauldron. Taking advantage of the agreement, Armenia withdrew its defeated, demoralized troops from Karabakh, and then, having gained time to complete and strengthen these units, sent them back to Karabakh.

According to Hajyly, when concluding a trilateral agreement, the Azerbaijani side should not consented to the deployment of Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh. "This is a serious mistake, so the current developments in Karabakh are just a beginning of the issues Azerbaijan will have to face," he believes.

As for the illegal entry of Iranian citizens and their vehicles to Karabakh, Hajyly believes that Russia is equally to blame here. "If no agreement had been reached between Russia and Iran on the  issue, then Iranian trucks and business people could not have appeared on the territory controlled by the Russian "peacekeeping contingent", " he stressed. -0—
