How can result the tension between Azerbaijan and Iran?
Baku/30.01.23/Turan: On the evening of January 29, a special flight arrived from Tehran to Baku with employees of the Azerbaijani embassy and their families. The same plane delivered the body of Orkhan Askerov, head of the security service of the embassy, who died because of the terrorist attack on January 27.
At the airport, the mission was met by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov. He told reporters that five people remained in the embassy in Tehran, who perform technical functions and are not diplomats. At the same time, the Azerbaijani consulate in Tabriz continues to operate, where Azerbaijani citizens in Iran can apply, Khalafov said.
He called "absurd" the Iranian side's statement that the terrorist's "family problems" were the reason for the January 27 attack on the embassy. "We demand that the Iranian side conduct an objective investigation and punish all those responsible," Khalafov said.
The latest processes are commented on in the program "Difficult Question" by political observer Zardusht Alizade.
According to him, this event coincided with the difficult stage at which the Iranian state and the Iranian government are now. “It's no secret that the Iranian state is literally reeling right now. There is a huge level of discontent in the country, there are riots, there are rallies, protests and the government cannot find a rational solution to the accumulated problems,” Alizade said, adding that not all is well in Iran's foreign policy arena.
“Tehran is in an extremely difficult situation. It is being threatened. There is no peace in the states surrounding it. And this embassy-related incident was not at all a pleasant gift for the Iranian government,” the political scientist believes. He expressed doubts about the veracity of the statements of official structures - no matter who they came from, Azerbaijan or Iran.
“There were similar cases in Azerbaijan too. Suffice it to recall the story of the attempt on the life of the former head of the Executive Power of Ganja, Elmar Veliyev. The Azerbaijani authorities said one thing, another thing turned out in court ... In a word, some kind of games were going on during the investigation.
Unfortunately, there is no trust in the Iranian authorities either. But there is no other way out, we must wait for the completion of the investigation, the start of the trial,” Alizade said.
The political observer believes that the general picture is that relations between Azerbaijan and Iran are extremely tense. Iran has tense relations with many other countries of the world. “And in this situation, Iran is not interested in further aggravation of relations with Azerbaijan. An extra "headache" in such a situation is completely useless to Iran," he said.
