Police arranged a "dignified meeting" for the PFPA members
Baku/06.10.21/Turan: On October 5, police officers detained activists and human rights defenders of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan who tried to hold a protest in front of a specialized medical institution of the penitentiary service in connection with a hunger strike by Niyameddin Ahmedov, a member of the party.
The protesters demanded the release of the imprisoned party members. They also called on the media and human rights activists not to remain indifferent to the fate of the arrested Niyameddin Ahmedov, Agil Humbatov, Pasha Umudov and Agil Maharramli.
Police officers demanded that the protesters disperse, arguing that in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, it is not allowed to gather in groups of more than 5 people. After that, several protesters were put into police cars and taken away in an unknown direction.
Some time later, the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan reported that the detainees were taken to the 3rd police department of the Khazar district.
Zafar Ahmedov, a human rights activist and co-founder of the NGO Line of Protection (Müdafiə Xətti), answered questions in connection with this incident in the program "Difficult Question".
According to him, no action was planned. Everything happened spontaneously. Supporters of Niyameddin Ahmedov, about 200 people, learned that on the 13th days of a hunger strike, Ahmedov was no longer able to walk and had to move in a wheelchair, went to the Specialized Medical Institution of the Penitentiary Service (SMIPS) to inquire about his health.
The police were brought up to the SMIPS building for a "worthy meeting" of Ahmedov's supporters. The police demanded that the arrivals disperse immediately, and then, after a certain period of time, began to rudely push the protesters away from the entrance to the SMIPS, pushed them into police cars and took them to the 3rd Khazar District Police Department. Many of the participants in this action were beaten and injured. The journalists, who covered this incident in fulfillment of their professional duties, suffered no less.
According to Zafar Ahmedov, a few hours after the arrest, many of the activists were released. On the same day, the court handed down administrative sentences against 12 of them.-0-
