The Russian-Ukrainian war. The 20th day.

Baku/16.03.22/Turan: Russia's aggression against Ukraine has been going on for 20 days. Despite the fierce resistance of Ukraine and the sanctions of the West, as well as the support provided to Ukraine, it has not yet been possible to stop the aggression. Meetings between Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians  gave no results. In this regard, there is an opinion that the West has chosen Ukraine as a victim in this war and for this reason it is not taking serious steps to end the war.

Director of the Institute of Political Management Azer Gasimly comments on the events around Ukraine in the program "Difficult Question".

According to him, the 5th round of Ukrainian-Russian talks is to take place today. Qasimly believes that Ukraine and Russia at some stage of these negotiations, in one form or another reach a peace agreement.

“Russia is primarily interested in this, but Ukraine is also interested in reaching an agreement. For Russian President Vladimir Putin, a hopeless situation has developed, since it is a question of maintaining power. Losing power is fraught with extremely serious consequences for him. Therefore, he needs victory like air. Or at least what he can present to his entourage and people as a victory,” Gasimly said.

According to the political scientist, Putin, of course, expected to take control of the whole of Ukraine. At a minimum, he had to annex part of Ukraine or completely cut it off from the Black Sea. “Putin has not abandoned his plans yet, however, in parallel with the hostilities, negotiations are underway,” Gasimly said.

In his opinion, Putin will not be able to carry out his plan and he will be forced to conclude a peace agreement with Ukraine. The condition of such an agreement could be Ukraine's refusal to join NATO and Russia's guarantees of Ukraine's security.

“The conditions that Russia previously put forward to Ukraine are not feasible. They are unacceptable for the Ukrainian side, it will not accept them, since this is actually a capitulation and the loss by Ukraine of its political subjectivity. Moreover, in the theater of operations, Russia is not able to achieve what it wants,” Gasimly said, adding that this is one of the options for getting out of this situation and is the most optimal for Putin.

“The process of convergence of positions has already begun. This is evidenced by the statements of Lavrov, Ukrainian and Russian politicians,” the political scientist concluded.
