Which side is the United States on?
Baku/19.09.22/Turan: On September 18, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi said during her visit to Yerevan, that the borders and sovereignty of Armenia were subjected to aggression.
"Armenia is important to us and we condemn, on behalf of Congress, Azerbaijan's deadly attacks on Armenia," Pelosi said at a briefing following a meeting with the speaker of the Armenian parliament.
She noted that "as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, the United States has clearly and for a long time stated that there is no military solution to the conflict."
“The purpose of our visit is to understand what Armenia expects from the US, what support we can provide and what we can do in defense cooperation. Armenia makes the decision, and we are ready to help if it accepts it,” Pelosi said.
Jackie Speer, who arrived with Pelosi, said the House of Representatives had passed a resolution condemning Azerbaijan's actions. “I hope it will be accepted soon. As for our obligations to Armenia, we will continue to support the territorial integrity of Armenia and oppose any changes in the borders of Armenia,” she said.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that “The statements made by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi during her visit to Armenia on September 18, 2022, distorting the situation in the region, are deeply regrettable.
The baseless and unfair accusations leveled by Nancy Pelosi against Azerbaijan are unacceptable.”
Political scientist Ahmed Alili comments on what is happening in the “Difficult Question” program.
He said the U.S. midterm congressional elections which will determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential campaign are approaching, analysts say.
“Serious competition is expected between Democrats and Republicans for control of the House of Representatives. The fact is that the coming to power of Democrat Joe Biden coincided with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the economic recession, the war in Ukraine, and the emergence of problems with the supply of Russian gas to Europe. Therefore, there are many points regarding the US economy, as well as the global economy as a whole, that cause dissatisfaction with the American voter. All this gives the Republicans a chance to take revenge on the Democrats for the defeat of Donald Trump.”
According to Alili, all this prompted the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Congress to make a rather risky visit to Taiwan from a diplomatic point of view in order to extract political dividends.
“Thus, the United States made it clear that it is ready to defend the current status of Taiwan by all means. Thus, the veil of certain uncertainty, so important in foreign policy, was removed. The same was done with respect to Armenia.
As we can see, the US position on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue does not coincide with ours. After the 44-day war, the United States remained aloof from solving the problems of the South Caucasus. This is exactly what the White House does not like,” the political scientist says.--0-
