Why did Pashinyan refuse to sign the document signed by Putin?
Baku/24.11.22/Turan: Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan refused to sign the final declaration of the CSTO summit held on November 23 in Yerevan, as well as the organization's declaration on providing collective assistance to Armenia. He explained this by the fact that the CSTO did not give a political assessment of Azerbaijan's "aggression" against the territorial integrity of Armenia.
At the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Azerbaijani-Armenian settlement requires the attention of the CSTO member countries. “In this regard, we positively assess the summit of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, held in Sochi at the end of October, in the presence of your obedient servant, the President of Russia. The talks that took place created a good basis for future compromises on fundamental issues,” Putin said.
It is noteworthy that Putin did not react in any way to the accusations of Nikol Pashinyan, who spoke before him. Thus, the Prime Minister of Armenia also accused the CSTO of inaction and refusal to protect Armenia from the "aggression of Azerbaijan".
Political scientist Ahmed Alili comments on what happened at the summit in the "Difficult Question" program.
A “virtual duel” took place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan, Alili said.
“There is an opinion in Russia that it did not defend Armenia during the 44-day war, and during the clashes in August 1-3 and September 13-14 because of Pashinyan. They say that if Pashinyan had not been the leader of Armenia, then Russia would have defended Armenia with great pleasure. And in Armenia, in turn, they are trying to present the case in such a way that Russia “betrayed” Armenia,” the political expert said noted.
Alili recalled that on October 31, Putin, speaking on the eve of the trilateral summit in Sochi, at the plenary meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club, essentially addressed Pashinyan with a message, which was as follows.
"Armenia must make a choice - which option for resolving the Karabakh issue it prefers, making it clear that the so-called Washington option, unlike the Russian one, provides for the recognition of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over Karabakh."
According to Alili, Putin presented the case in such a way that he is doing everything so that Karabakh becomes Armenian, but a bad person - Pashinyan entered into an agreement with the Americans and therefore Armenia loses Karabakh to Azerbaijan. Later, during the Sochi summit, Pashinyan expressed full agreement with the Russian version of the settlement, and thus the ball ended up on the Russian side.
“At the CSTO summit, Pashinyan showed that Putin’s words and promises are worth absolutely nothing,” the political expert noted.
