Azerbaijan's Tax Authority Issues Warning on VAT Refund Fraud
The State Tax Service (STS) of Azerbaijan has issued an urgent warning to citizens regarding a surge in fraudulent activities exploiting the name of the country's VAT refund project. According to the STS, cybercriminals have been creating counterfeit websites and online pages that closely mimic the official internet resources of the State Tax Service, luring unsuspecting citizens with promises of VAT refunds.
The STS highlighted that these fraudulent platforms are designed to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive bank card information. Once victims click on the fake links and enter their details, the criminals gain access to their bank accounts and can siphon off funds.
In its advisory, the Tax Service emphasized the importance of vigilance and caution. Citizens are urged not to input personal or financial information on any suspicious websites or emails. The STS advised checking the authenticity of email addresses and ensuring that only official electronic resources are used for any tax-related activities to prevent financial losses.
The STS has been actively working to combat these fraudulent schemes and protect citizens from financial harm. The agency is collaborating with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to identify and shut down the fraudulent websites. The draft law "On Amendments to the Tax Code," adopted in its third reading, provides for tax exemptions on the sale of locally manufactured buses in Azerbaijan and the supply of spare parts for these vehicles.
