December 15, 1996 the company Azercell Telecom was founded, becoming the first GSM-operator in Azerbaijan.
As stated in the press release, for 18 years the company shows strong growth and maintains a leading position in the competitive market. During these years, Azercell introduced for the first time in Azerbaijan a number of technological innovations and concepts: technology GSM, prepaid mobile service, GPRS / EDGE (mobile Internet), a call center 24/7, offices Azercell Express, functioning on the basis of the concept of "three in one" (one-stop shopping), mobile e-service Asan Imza, etc. The company's network, which now stands at 51% of the mobile market in the country, covers 99.8% of the population. Now the number of subscribers exceeds 4.6 million people. In 2011 the company launched a network of 3G, and in 2012 - the fourth generation network (LTE). Azercell is the leader in the mobile phone industry of Azerbaijan and is the largest investor in the non-oil sector, the document notes.
Being a part of the global telecommunications group, Azercell, also marks another significant date. On December 14 there was 5 years since the introduction of the technology 4G, which marked a revolution in telecommunications technology. The first operator in the world, Telia Sonera, which has carried out commercial launch of 4G, became the main shareholder of the leader of the mobile market in Azerbaijan. 4G technology was first introduced December 14, 2009 in Stockholm and Oslo. Less than a year later, the TV channels live through 4G, broadcast the wedding ceremony of Swedish Crown Princess. In the same year, 4G was also introduced in Finland. Telia Sonera is the first operator in the country to offer its subscribers 4G. In 2013, in Estonia, Telia Sonera successfully built a network of 4G, which covers 95% of the country. Today, Telia Sonera offers 4G services in 10 countries of the world. In addition to Sweden, Norway and Finland, 4G has also been launched in Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, Moldova and Azerbaijan. Telia Sonera is also able to create a living connection through 4G in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
Azercell is the first company in Azerbaijan to offer services 4G. Being part of a family group of companies Telia Sonera, Azercell was the first operator that in 2012 made a commercial launch of 4G technology not only in Azerbaijan but also throughout the region.
