Ministry Speaks about Energy Potential of Liberated Territories
Baku / 02.11.20 / Turan: Before the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the regions around it, there were 20 substations with a capacity of 858.6 MVA in this region.
This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan. The stations were located in Shusha, Khojaly, Khojavend, Lachin, Gubadli, Jabrayil, Zangilan, Fizuli, Kelbajar and Agdam.
“However, as a result of the occupation by Armenia, the infrastructure was either completely destroyed or plundered,” the Ministry said.
At the same time, this region had gas lines with a length of 2 thousand kilometers and 34 gas distribution equipment.
The Ministry noted that after the liberation of the territories, the destroyed and looted infrastructure will be re-evaluated.
The Energy Ministry stated that Nagorno-Karabakh and the regions around it have great potential for various energy sources.
Karabakh is one of the main regions that form the water reserves of Azerbaijan and 25% of the country's water reserves, or 2 billion 560 million cubic meters per year are formed in this region.
In the occupied territories, there were three large hydroelectric power plants, including the Terter hydroelectric power station built on the Terter river in 1976 and the Sarsang reservoir.
In terms of the height of the dam (125 meters), the Sarsang reservoir is one of the highest in Azerbaijan; it provided irrigation water for about 125 thousand hectares of land in six regions (Terter, Agdam, Barda, Goranboy, Yevlakh and Agjabedi).
Other important energy facilities in the region are the Khudaferin and Gyz Galasy hydroelectric power plants.
The Ministry noted that the liberation of the Jabrayil region from occupation in October 2020 and the taking under full control of the state border with Iran are very important in terms of completing the construction of these power plants. These projects will play a special role both in providing electricity and in irrigating the liberated territories of Azerbaijan.
In addition, the Ministry believes that this region has great potential for the development of solar and wind power.
On the territory of the Kelbajar region and in Shusha there are reserves of thermal water, the potential of which will be used after the complete liberation of the territories.
The Ministry informed that there are also deposits of coal in Karabakh, and in particular in the village of Chardagly, Terter region, there are 8.5 million tons of coal reserves. –71D-
