Erdogan against the background of a pro-Palestinian rally on October 28, 2023
The Turkish head of state showed such a sharp reaction when the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood organization in Egypt and the country's president Muhammad Morsi was overthrown on July 3, 2013, and then on June 17, 2019, when he died in prison, declaring 3 days of mourning in Turkey. From July 2013 to June 2018, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who caused a storm of Rabia in Turkey, not only criticized the Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al Sisi, who came to power through a military coup, but also ended all relations with Cairo after the death of his close friend Morsi, whom he viewed from the window of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the prison.
Turkey, which held the temporary chairmanship of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 2015-2018, most likely completely gave Mahmoud Abbas up and took a waiting position on the issue of Palestine. In 2005-2006, Ankara, which was engaged in active diplomatic activities with the aim of adapting Hamas to the Palestinian political system, was most likely unable to meet the more radical demands of Hamas, and the leaders of the organization set sail in a wide geographical area from the Gulf countries to Syria and from there to Tehran. However, Ankara specifically celebrated the fact that Hamas came to power in Gaza in 2006.
On May 31, 2010, when the Israeli security forces mercilessly interfered with the Mavi Marmara ship carrying aid from Turkey to Gaza, there was a tragedy that resulted in the death of 10 people, but Turkey patiently waited for the desired day without losing hope. The surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 upset the balance in the region and exposed many flaws in the Israeli army. Analyzing the situation in detail, Ankara, while maintaining restraint, President Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Fidan expressed their views on the situation and put forward specific proposals.
When the Istanbul provincial organization of the ruling party announced that a rally would be held on October 28 at the former Atatürk Airport, the largest vacant lot in the city on the European continent, everyone who followed the processes knew very well that Mr. Erdoğan would use that rally with maximum skill as the most powerful leader of political Islam at the moment. 2 days before the rally, Mr. Erdoğan announced that he "does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization", and on October 28, not only stuck the word "organization" directly on Israel's back but also shouted that they would declare the Jewish state a "war criminal". One of the factors that pushed the head of state of Turkey to speak so harshly is, first of all, the fact that a part of the world community showed such a sharp reaction against Israel.
The second factor is that Erdoğan, who was able to establish the power of political Islam in Turkey, feels stronger than, for example, 10 years ago.
The third factor is that the political Islamists of Palestine and Turkey, who feel very close to the movement of the Muslim Brotherhood, are perhaps for the first time so united. Another factor that did not stop Mr. Erdoğan from speaking so harshly was the decision of the UN General Assembly on the cease-fire in Gaza.
Yes, despite the disagreements of the previous years, the failure of the AKP and President Erdoğan to support Hamas in the processes that have been unfolding since October 7, as they say in Turkey, "would be against the nature of things." And in his half-century political career, Mr. Erdoğan has been so loyal to his political outlook on the issue of Palestine, and so sharp against Israel (Since the "One minutes" roar in Davos on January 29, 2009, was not a protest against a specific conflict between Israel and Palestine, but of a general nature, It cannot be compared with the shoutings of the head of state of Turkey on October 28). Yes, the October 7 attack and Israel's response to that attack were able to bring two institutions from two different geographies so close, one of which came out of the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood (Hamas), and the other, which considers the Muslim Brotherhood its master of political ideas (AKP).
Mr. Erdoğan's (without a doubt, the state institutions of the Republic of Turkey are behind him, and decisions are made after serious analysis by those institutions) following a path other than burning bridges with Israel in these circumstances will reveal a situation that is completely incompatible with the philosophy of political Islam, and above all, the head of state of Turkey himself would be worried about this. Therefore, on October 28, the head of state of Turkey, who played his cards completely open, was able to integrate more with the Muslim Brotherhood and also added a few points to his box to strengthen his role as the world leader of political Islam.
Therefore, it will be necessary to monitor Turkey more closely in the further progress of the ground operation that Israel is planning to organize in Gaza.
