Armen Abazyan has been reassigned as Director of the National Security Council of Armenia
Armen Abazyan has been reassigned to the post of Director of the National Security Service of Armenia in accordance with the decision of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, published on the official government portal. This decision was made after Abazyan was initially dismissed from his position by presidential decree on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
The personnel changes are the result of recent amendments to the law "On Service in National Security Agencies", brought into line with the constitutional requirements established in 2015. According to these changes, the appointment of the head of the National Security Service will now be the prerogative of the Prime Minister, not the President.
Armen Abazyan assumed the post of Director of the National Security Service on November 8, 2020, in accordance with the presidential decree of then-President Armen Sargsyan. It is noteworthy that Abazyan previously held the position of deputy head of the special service since August 12, 2020.
