Participants of London Conference Called for Sanctions against Violators of Media Freedom
Baku / 07.07.19 / Turan: On July 11, the Global Conference on Freedom of the Media organized in London by the governments of the United Kingdom and Canada discussed the issues of protecting media freedom, eliminating difficulties in this area, and ways to counter disinformation.
According to a special correspondent of Turan from London, the forum participants expressed concern about the increasing attacks on the freedom of media and journalists in several countries around the world.
One of the international experts, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, suggested introducing sanctions against states violating media freedom.
In her view, these measures should be applied systematically and consistently.
She also called for a simplified visa regime for asylum-seeking journalists and to develop model legislation for freedom of speech and media.
The forum participants noted with dismay that black colors are becoming increasingly widespread on the world map - territories where media freedom is suppressed.
Only 9 percent of the world's population lives in countries where there is an atmosphere of media freedom.
British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that his country, along with other governments, is making efforts to fulfill with young democracies their commitments in the field of media freedom.
"We in the UK have a national action plan to ensure the safety of journalists. We are ready to share our experience," said Hunt. -16D--
