Baku/30.08.22/Turan: Following the First Karabakh War, 3,890 citizens of Azerbaijan are considered missing. Of these, 3,171 were servicemen and 719 were civilians. Secretary of the state commission for refugees, missing persons and hostages Ismail Akhundov said this on Tuesday during a conference on the occasion of the International Refugee Day.
Of this number, 872 people were taken hostage and remained in the occupied territories. The released prisoners and hostages later confirmed that they had seen these persons alive. Throughout the entire period, Armenia concealed information about these persons and their fate.
Only after the Second Karabakh War the Armenian side handed over the mixed remains of 138 people missing in the First Karabakh War.
After the Second Karabakh war about 300 Azerbaijani servicemen went missing, whose remains were later found. Later on, with the participation of the International Red Cross their remains were brought out and handed over to their families. However, six participants of the Second Karabakh war have not been found yet.
According to the ICRC information, 776 Armenians were considered missing after the First Karabakh war, and 345 - during the Second Karabakh war. The corpses of 1,713 Armenian military personnel were handed over to the Armenian side during the joint activities after November 10, 2020.
During the First Karabakh war 1480 Azerbaijanians and 509 Armenians were released from captivity.
Note that after the Second Karabakh war the Armenians released 25 citizens of Azerbaijan (19 servicemen, 6 civilians). In turn, the Azerbaijanians released 159 people (118 servicemen, 41 civilians, including 5 women) of Armenian origin.
The state commission of Azerbaijan regularly provided information to ICRC about Armenian military prisoners and detainees and created conditions to visit them.
Also, conditions were created for these persons to write letters to their relatives, send video messages and speak by phone. -0-
