Alesker Mammadli questioned the reliability of the biopsy results

A biopsy revealed the benign nature of a tumor in the thyroid gland of Alesker Mammadli, the    founder of “Toplum TV.” However, he and his family do not trust the results of the study, due to incomplete medical procedures and interference of security forces in the activities of doctors. At the end of last week, the results of a biopsy performed by A.Mammadli on June 22 became known, his brother Nasimi Mammadli told Turan. According to the diagnosis, the tumor is benign.

"The detection of tumor goodness is certainly encouraging, but we have serious reasons to be suspicious of these results," Mammadli said. So, smears taken in the right isthmus of the thyroid gland were examined. However, the node in the left isthmus of the thyroid gland has not been examined at all. "Because the law enforcement officers did not allow the doctor to work freely, despite the doctor's request not to interfere with them," Mammadli continued. At the same time, he recalled that in March, just before his detention, Mammadli underwent an ultrasound examination at a private clinic, which revealed a 23 mm tumor in the left side of his throat with a 50-75 percent chance of cancer. According to him, Mammadli's  health continues to deteriorate.

"Today, Alesker called from the pre-trial detention center. His voice sounded weak and tired again.  Tumors in his throat prevent him from sleeping, causing suffocation and severe headaches. He suffers from insomnia. In the summer heat, his condition in the confined space of the pre-trial detention center is even more aggravated," Mammadli said. According to him, the doctors involved by the family consider it necessary to carry out surgery in any case, even if the tumor really turns out to be benign.

"Firstly, the tumors are causing Alesker suffering. Secondly, if there are risks that a benign tumor may subsequently turn into a malignant one. However, Alesker is against the operation in detention conditions, because under the rough supervision of the security forces, the operation may pose a threat to his life. Therefore, we will again apply for Alesker's transfer to house arrest for a second biopsy, clarification of the diagnosis and surgery," Mammadli stressed.

He also said that Mammadli wrote a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee about the rough treatment of him by the security forces on June 22 when he was taken to the hospital for examination.

*On March 6-8, 9 employees of  “Toplum TV” and its partner organization, the Institute of Democratic Initiatives, were detained. They were accused of smuggling foreign currency. Seven people were arrested and two were placed under police supervision.

The founder of “Toplum TV,” Alesker Mammadli, was also accused of smuggling currency. During a search of his apartment, they allegedly found 7,300 euros. Human rights activists have recognized the defendants in this case as political prisoners, and international organizations have called for their release.
