Aliyev on Corruption of Border Guards
Baku / 10.04.18 / Turan: Authorities will severely punish bribe takers and extortionists, who take money from foreign tourists, said the head of state Ilham Aliyev, speaking at a Cabinet meeting on the results of the first quarter of 2018.
In the matter of issuing visas to foreigners there were serious violations. At the airports, tourists were troubled and unreasonably demanded money. Those who committed this disgrace, these violations, which are a crime, are brought to criminal account," Aliyev said.
At airports, a new system is being created, which will be applied from the next month. At all our border checkpoints, guests should be provided with the most comfortable conditions, so that there are no queues or money extortions.
"I strictly warned the relevant structures. Security issues should not be a reason for queues at borders.
Law enforcement officials unreasonably interfere in the work of hotels, allegedly providing security. But behind this lies the desire to rip off money and this must be put an end," Aliyev continued.
"One of my foreign colleagues told me that foreigners coming to Azerbaijan are required a photograph. I was horrified. What photo?! Does a person traveling abroad take a photo with him? And if there is no photo, they are required to pay. How can you allow such disgrace!" said the head of state. -02D-

Azerbaijan is positioning itself as a key energy partner for Europe amidst growing challenges in the natural gas market following the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. The disruption, marking the end of a decade-long transit route, is expected to heighten competition in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market and drive up prices for alternative energy sources.
