Appeal court keeps activist Jalal Javadov under arrest

On 7 February the Baku court of appeal considered an appeal against the administrative arrest of public activist Jalal Javadov.

During the proceedings Javadov said that he was detained on 30 January near the metro station ‘28 May’ and taken to the nearest - 22nd branch of Nasimi district police department of Baku.

According to the activist, the police forced him to drink a liquid with drugs under torture.

After a while, the activist felt ill and an ambulance was called.

Medics took the young man to Baku city medical clinical centre, where he was placed in the toxicology department.

The next day, on 31 January, the Nasimi district court of Baku sentenced Javadov to 30 days of administrative arrest.

In the course of the appeal proceedings, it turned out that the decision of the court of first instance attributed confessions to him.

However, Javadov stated that he did not give such testimony and the trial in Nasimi court lasted only 3 minutes. Javadov said that his signature in the case materials was falsified, he did not sign any documents.

The activist considered his case fabricated and politically motivated and the reason for his arrest was his demonstration of support for the arrested ‘Meydan TV’ journalists at the municipal elections.

The court of appeal left the activist in custody.

It was not possible to obtain comments from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Recall that Javadov was detained on 30 January. The following day the Nasimi district court of Baku arrested him for 30 days and found him guilty under Article 206 (illegal consumption of manufacture, purchase, storage, transportation or sending of drugs not for the purpose of sale in the amount necessary for personal consumption) of the Code of Administrative Offences.

Activists believe that Javadov was detained due to his protest action on 29 January at the municipal elections.

At one of the polling stations, Javadov dropped a poster with photos of arrested 'Meydan Tv' journalists into the ballot box.
