Baku/16.06.23/Turan: The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry called "absurd" the statements of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that the creation of the Lachin border checkpoint "created a tense humanitarian situation" for Karabakh Armenians.

On June 16, at a meeting of the Armenian government Pashinyan stated that "the installation by Azerbaijan of an illegal checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, the blocking of electricity and natural gas supplies to Nagorno-Karabakh have extremely aggravated the humanitarian situation."

"We would like to remind you once again that any interference by the Armenian side in the establishment of a border checkpoint by Azerbaijan on its sovereign territory is an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and such actions contradict all norms and principles of international law," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a comment.

The document points to the creation of "all conditions for transparent, safe and orderly crossing of the border checkpoint by the Armenian residents of the Karabakh region" and hundreds of residents have freely used this road since the establishment of the checkpoint.

"The purpose of the provocation committed on June 15 by the Armenian side against the border checkpoint and our border guards is to cast a shadow on the successful operation of the checkpoint, to prevent the safe and free use of the border checkpoint. It is completely unacceptable to call the measures taken by Azerbaijan to ensure the security of the border checkpoint after the attack that resulted in the injury of a serviceman of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan and the investigation of the reasons for this provocation a "blockade"," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry comments further.

The ministry recommended that the Armenian leadership, instead of making unfounded statements, "abandon provocations, responsibly and constructively approach the negotiations on a peace agreement" and the issue of unblocking communications in the region, comply with the obligations arising from the Trilateral Statement, including the complete withdrawal of its forces from Azerbaijani territories, refrain from steps against territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan".  ---06B---
