Authorities Celebrate Heydar Aliyev's Return Day
Baku / 15.06.18 / Turan: On June 15, 1993, at the invitation of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan (PFA) government, Heydar Aliyev came from Nakhchivan to Baku.
This invitation was connected with the fact that Heydar Aliyev became a mediator between the detachments of Suret Huseynov, who raised a military mutiny, and the PFA government to prevent civil war.
After his arrival in Baku, Aliyev was elected Speaker of the Parliament, but the contradictions between the government and the rebels were not alleviated.
As a result, President Abulfaz Elchibey left Baku and went to his homeland in Nakhchivan, and Aliyev assumed the functions of head of state, appointing the rebellious leader Suret Huseynov the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan.
A year later, Suret Huseynov was accused of attempting a coup and fled the country. Later he was arrested in Russia and extradited to Azerbaijan.
Heydar Aliyev held elections and became President of the country.
These events during the life of Heydar Aliyev, in 1998, were called the National Salvation Day and are celebrated as a state holiday. -02B-
