Azerbaijan and Iran Take First Step Towards Reaching Agreements on Caspian Sea

Baku / 29.03.18 / Turan: Memorandum of Understanding on the development of relevant blocks in the Caspian Sea was signed in Baku on March 28 following the talks between the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Iran, Ilham Aliyev and Hassan Rouhani.

Also signed were the intergovernmental agreement on the financing of the Astara-Resht railway section (Iran), the memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Economy of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance of Iran, the memorandum of understanding on strengthening cooperation in the field of industry between the Ministry of Economy of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade of Iran; the memorandum of understanding on the program of action on cooperation in medical science between the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education of Iran; the executive program of the memorandum of understanding for 2018-2019 between the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Sport and Youth of Iran; the program on exchange in the sphere of culture and art for 2018-2021 between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Orientation of Iran; the executive program on cooperation between the State Committee for the Problems of the Family, Women and Children of Azerbaijan and the Vice-Presidency of Iran on Women and the Family.

Note that between Baku and Tehran there are serious disagreements regarding the delimitation of the Caspian seabed and joint energy cooperation at sea.

In July 2001, Iranian warships attacked the Azerbaijani research vessel Caspian Geophysical, which was exploring the block of offshore Alov-Araz-Sharg fields. Since then, the work there has been discontinued.

Among the signed agreements, the financing of the Astara-Resht railway attracts attention. Azerbaijan will provide Iran with a $ 500 million loan for the construction of this highway, which is part of the North-South transport corridor.

The construction of the 180 km long Astara-Resht railway will take three years. -06B--
