Washington D.C./16.05.23/Turan:  The State Department on Monday called the latest talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia an "important step toward" clinching a durable peace, however refrained from offering further assessment, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.

"I don’t have any additional assessments on it from here... I will let the two parties speak to updates," Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson, told a daily press briefing when asked by TURAN about the results of last weekend's Brussels talks.

"Obviously, the U.S. was not a party to these talks," Patel reminded.

He went on to add, "... But as a follow-on to the talks that we hosted in Arlington, we continue to believe that these are important steps forward as we continue to find that a durable peace is possible between these two countries."

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in Brussels on Sunday at the EU's invitation.

Over the weekend, U.S. acting Assistant Secretary of State Derek Hogan, and his deputy Erika Olson called Yerevan and Baku separately, to discuss the state of the latest talks with foreign ministers.
