Azerbaijani Citizens Trust EU More than Other International Institutions, Survey Results
Baku / 12.07.19 / Turan: A survey among Azerbaijani citizens revealed that 46% of respondents express a positive attitude towards the European Union.
The head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Kestutis Jankauskas, said today at the presentation of the survey results.
The annual survey was conducted in the countries of the Eastern Partnership program (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus). In total, 6,000 people were interviewed, 1,000 in each country.
For comparison, we note that in 2016 only 27% of respondents expressed a positive attitude towards the EU, in 2017 47%, in 2018 39%.
On the issue of confidence in international institutions, Azerbaijani citizens put the EU in first place.
So, 35% of respondents said that they trust the EU most of all, 25% each trust the UN and the Eurasian Economic Union, and 20% trust NATO.
Regarding the values that are associated with the EU, economic prosperity (78%), rule of law (78), human rights (77%) were noted as three core values.
And among the least noted values of the EU were democracy (70%), freedom of religion (68%), and lack of corruption (57%).
In terms of personal values, respondents from Azerbaijan noted more peaceful conditions, security and stability (52%), honesty and transparency (45%), and freedom of speech (26%). In this category, personal freedom (10%), respect for other cultures, ethnic minorities (2%), and media freedom (2%) were noted less.
According to the survey on the most relevant topics about the EU, which respondents are looking for, in the first place is the lifestyle in the EU (39%). 35% are looking for social and political news, 33% for economic news, 32% for education and culture programs, 12% for EU general information, 7% for opportunities created by the EU, and 5% for relations between the EU and Eastern Partnership countries. -71D-
