Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry on Anniversary of Occupation of Lachin
Baku / 18.05.20 / Turan: May 18 marks 28 years since the occupation by the Armenian forces of the Lachin region of Azerbaijan. Then, 237 people were killed, 67 went missing, and 77 thousand residents of the district underwent ethnic cleansing. This was stated in a statement by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry on Monday.
During the occupation, numerous monuments of world and local importance were destroyed, including temples, mosques and museums and mausoleums.
"Armenia, grossly violating international law, including its obligations under the Geneva Conventions, continues illegal activities in the Lachin region, as well as in other occupied Azerbaijani territories: geographical names are being changed, the region’s natural resources are being plundered, illegal infrastructure changes are being implemented, and a targeted resettlement policy is being implemented and the demographic composition of the region is changing," the statement said.
Armenia continues to ignore UN Security Council resolutions NN 822, 853, 874 and 884 of 1993, requiring the immediate withdrawal of Armenian forces from the occupied territories.
"The preservation of Azerbaijani territories under military occupation will never give the political results expected by Armenia. The territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within the internationally recognized borders has not been and cannot be discussed," the document said. -02D-

Armenia is not against the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, but does not consider it appropriate to discuss this issue now. "In the context of peace, we consider it possible to make a decision on the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group. When peace is an established fact, the existence of such a format may raise questions," Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press conference today. "The whole question is about the timing, we need to understand how effectively and correctly to turn such topics into a subject of discussion right now," the Armenian Prime Minister added.

On August 31, Azerbaijan observes a "day of silence" before the Sunday’s early parliamentary elections for the unicameral Milli Majlis. All electoral campaigning is prohibited 24 hours before the voting. The early elections were initiated by the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party. This decision was motivated by the overlap of the scheduled elections in November with the global UN forum - the COP20 climate conference taking place in Baku.

On August 30, at approximately 22:55, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant in Metsamor was disconnected from the country's power grid, as reported by the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure. The shutdown was caused by a lightning strike, which triggered the plant's safety systems to switch the station to a safe shutdown mode. Currently, the plant's staff is working on restarting the facility.
