Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry responds to Paris' reaction to border incidents
Baku/17.06.23/Turan: June 16 statement by Anne-Claire Legendre, press secretary of the French Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, due to the provocations on the Azerbaijani-Armenian conditional border, is biased and does not reflect the real situation in the region. This is said in a comment made by Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Aikhan Hajizadeh.
"I would like to remind the French side that Azerbaijan has provided regulated, free and safe movement of hundreds of Armenians through the Lachin checkpoint in both directions in accordance with international norms and rules. Despite this, our border guard was wounded as a result of Armenian shelling of the border crossing on 15 June. Security measures and investigative actions are currently underway," Hajizadeh noted.
At the same time he drew attention to the fact that the French side has reacted in no way to the fact that Armenia is endangering the civilian population with the mines produced in 2021 in Azerbaijani territory. The Armenian side is preventing the dignified and safe return of Azerbaijanis to their homeland through provocations.
"The Armenian side must put an end to its provocative actions hindering the peace process, completely withdraw its armed forces from Azerbaijani territory, and fulfil its obligations to restore communications in the region. Azerbaijan is determined to ensure peace, stability and development in the region, as well as to normalise relations with Armenia on the basis of such principles of international law as territorial integrity and sovereignty," Hajizadeh continued.
He called on Paris "not to create a fertile ground for attempts to hinder the process by once again demonstrating a biased position".
Earlier, the representative of the French Foreign Ministry said that Paris "deplores the armed incidents that occurred in the last 48 hours at several points on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, including the shelling of civilian personnel in Yeraskh on Armenian territory." The French Foreign Ministry called on the sides "for restraint, de-escalation and the protection of civilians". Paris also "reiterates its support for the full implementation of the ruling of the International Court of Justice of 22 February 2023 to restore traffic along the corridor". -06В-
