Azerbaijani journalists' rights violated in European report
Baku/07.03.23/Turan: In the 2022 war in Ukraine, 12 journalists and media workers were killed and 21 wounded in the line of duty.
The war took place amid a degradation of press freedom around the world, including in Europe, where the number of detained journalists has increased significantly. This is stated in the annual report of the Council of Europe's Platform of Partner Organisations for Protection and Safety of Journalists.
The report, entitled "The war in Europe and the fight for the right to report", explores the main threats to media freedom in Europe and offers recommendations to the Council of Europe, the European Union and member states.
In 2022, the Platform issued 289 warnings of serious threats or attacks on media freedom in 37 countries, including the Russian Federation, monitoring which was decided to continue despite the country's expulsion from the CoE in March 2022.
The report elaborates the facts of the suppression of independent journalism in Russia and in the occupied territories of Ukraine and contains a special chapter on Belarus.
In addition to journalists killed in the line of duty in the war, the Platform documented the murder of journalist Güngor Arslan in Turkey.
It has to be noted that arbitrary arrests and detentions of journalists have become commonplace in Europe. As of December 31, 2022, 127 journalists and media workers were in detention, including 4 media representatives in Azerbaijan.
During 2022 the Platform recorded 74 attacks against journalists, 41 detentions and imprisonments, 94 cases of harassment and intimidation and 80 other negative actions against media.
Other issues addressed in the report are legal restrictions for journalists, surveillance of journalists, fake news and disinformation, abuse of judicial power to intimidate journalists, etc.
The report identifies Azerbaijan among the countries where a new legislation restricting freedom of expression and independent journalism has been passed, and in particular introduced strict new registration rules for local and foreign journalists.
The report also points to threats to journalists even when they are outside their countries. For example, in June 2022, the French police prevented an assassination attempt on Azerbaijan's Mohammed Mirzali. -06В-
