Azerbaijan's criticism is due to West’s pro-Armenian position - I. Aliyev

Baku/11.01.24/Turan: External forces constantly interfere in Azerbaijan's internal affairs and the reason for this is the pro-Armenian position of Western countries. This opinion was expressed by head of state Ilham Aliyev in an interview to local TV channels on 10 January.

"Back in the early 90s, the 907-th Amendment was adopted against us. Allegedly we keep Armenia in blockade, and this despite the fact that our lands were occupied. At that time, a Western-backed democratic government was in power in Azerbaijan. This is an indicator of how strong anti-Azerbaijani sentiments were, and this attitude remained in the following years," Aliyev said.

"Analysing all this injustice, I come to the conclusion that the Karabakh issue is at the root of it. We are constantly kept under pressure, labelled as dictatorship, autocracy and democracy — we are allegedly the suppressing regime so that we should bow to them. That is why they cannot forgive us for the liberation of Karabakh, as this lever of influence is out of their hands," Aliyev said, without naming whom he meant.

He also admitted that Western leaders had urged him to withdraw from positions taken on the border with Armenia near Jermuk. "I told them that I have to see with my eyes what the Armenians are doing. We have no intentions of going further, and if we wanted to, no one would stop us," Aliyev noted. -0-
