British Embassy Organizes Reception on Occasion of Queen Elizabeth II Birthday
Baku / 14.06.17 / Turan: The British Embassy organized a reception on the evening of June 13 on the occasion of the national holiday of the United Kingdom - the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
As the British Ambassador to Baku Carol Crofts noted, this year's celebration coincided with the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Participants of the event, representatives of state bodies, business, civil society, the media, political parties and foreign diplomatic corps, were presented with a photo slide dedicated to a quarter century of the history of the bilateral cooperation.
It reflected all important events in the bilateral relations, starting with the visit of the former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Baku during the presidency of Abulfaz Elchibey in 1992.
In his turn, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev conveyed congratulations on behalf of the Azerbaijani government.
He noted that over the past 25 years, relations between the two countries have been actively developed and their base is energy cooperation. BP takes part in large energy projects in Azerbaijan. Great Britain is the largest foreign investor in Azerbaijan. British investments in Azerbaijan today amount to 23 billion USD. "We want this cooperation to be extended to other spheres, including the non-oil sector," Mammadguliyev said. He also noted the importance of Britain's support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
The performance of the military band The Salamanca Band and Bugles of The Rifles, which is being on a tour in Baku, took place at the event. -06C--

Armenia is not against the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, but does not consider it appropriate to discuss this issue now. "In the context of peace, we consider it possible to make a decision on the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group. When peace is an established fact, the existence of such a format may raise questions," Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press conference today. "The whole question is about the timing, we need to understand how effectively and correctly to turn such topics into a subject of discussion right now," the Armenian Prime Minister added.

On August 31, Azerbaijan observes a "day of silence" before the Sunday’s early parliamentary elections for the unicameral Milli Majlis. All electoral campaigning is prohibited 24 hours before the voting. The early elections were initiated by the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party. This decision was motivated by the overlap of the scheduled elections in November with the global UN forum - the COP20 climate conference taking place in Baku.

On August 30, at approximately 22:55, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant in Metsamor was disconnected from the country's power grid, as reported by the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure. The shutdown was caused by a lightning strike, which triggered the plant's safety systems to switch the station to a safe shutdown mode. Currently, the plant's staff is working on restarting the facility.
