Charges against Nazim Beidemirli toughened
Baku/01.09.23/Turan: Charges against businessman, ex-deputy Nazim Beidemirli, who is under arrest, have toughened, his lawyer Agyl Laidj said. According to the prosecution, Beidemirli extorted money from someone by threats back in 1996 in the city of Lipetsk of the Russian Federation, the lawyer said. In this regard, the charge of extortion by threats has been supplemented with another subparagraph – 182.2.2 (the same actions committed repeatedly) of the Criminal Code.
The lawyer considers the accusation unfounded. According to him, even if the act incriminated by Beidemirli took place, the statute of limitations on it has expired. Beidermirli considers all the charges against him to be fabricated.
"Nazim Beidemirli considers himself a "prisoner of ecology" and is convinced that the reason for his arrest was the desire (of the authorities) to present environmental protests in the village of Soyudlu in a distorted light," the lawyer said.
* N. Beidemirli was detained on July 4 by the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Charges were brought against him under Article 182.2.4 (Extortion by threats to seize property in a significant amount) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The next day, the court chose a preventive measure against him in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months. Beidemirli rejected the accusation, called it fabricated and devoid of legal grounds. According to him, the real reason for his arrest is his statements in connection with the protests of the residents of Seyudlu in Gedabey region against environmental pollution by a nearby gold ore processing plant.
Human rights activists recognized Beidemirli as a political prisoner.-03B06-
