Court keeps Ali Zeynalov in custody
The Baku Court of Appeal, presided over by Emin Aliyev, considered an appeal against the prolongation of arrest of Ali Zeynalov, an employee of 'Toplum TV', on 22 January.
The appeal was left without satisfaction, lawyer Fariz Namazly told 'Turan'.
A decision to prolong the arrests of the defendants in the case until 6 April was adopted in late December. Consideration of the appeal was delayed because the appeal was not delivered to the court on time by the state service 'Azerpochta', Namazly explained.
It ought to be noted that on 22 January it was announced that the preliminary investigation in the ‘Toplum TV’ case was over.
* On 6-8 March 2024, 9 journalists of 'Toplum TV' and its partner organisation 'Institute for Democratic Initiatives' were detained.
Seven were arrested for 4 months on smuggling charges and two were placed under police supervision.
On 17 January, all of them were charged with 6 more Articles of the Criminal Code on economic crimes. At the same time, journalist Farid Ismayilov, who had been under police supervision, was also arrested.
