On 23 January, the Khatai district court of Baku did not satisfy a petition to transfer 'Meydan TV' journalist Aytaj Tapdyg under house arrest. This was reported to Turan by lawyer Javad Javadov.

The defence believes that there are no grounds for keeping the journalist in custody, as the charge of smuggling brought against her is far-fetched.

Tapdyg herself said she is being persecuted for her journalistic activities. The defence asked to release the journalist under house arrest or bail. However, the court left Tapdyg in custody.

An appeal will be filed against the court's decision, the defence lawyer said.

*On 6 December, 'Meydan TV' employees Aynur Elgunesh, Aytaj Tapdyg, Hayalya Agayeva, Aysel Umudova, Natig Javadly and freelance journalist Ramin Deco (Jabrayilzadeh) were detained on suspicion of currency smuggling. On 8 December, the court arrested them all.

The journalists linked the criminal case to their professional activities. Human rights activists recognised them as political prisoners.
