Vladimir Putin and Nikol Pashinyan
Did Putin promise Pashinyan to finance the construction of a railway through Meghri?
Baku / 24.11.22 / Turan: During a bilateral meeting between Russian President Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, held on November 23 in Yerevan, the parties also discussed the construction of a railway through Meghri.
Nikol Pashinyan announced this at a meeting of the Armenian government on Thursday.
“In the course of negotiations with the President of Russia, we received certain signals or information, which means that there is a realistic and serious opportunity for us to start work on the restoration of the Horadiz-Meghri-Ordubad-Sadarak-Yeraskh railway,” Pashinyan said.
“If there is no deviation from what we agreed on yesterday, then within the framework of the Armenian Crossroads project, in particular, on the issue of restoring railways, there may be a need for large investments, and we are glad that we have such opportunities,” Pashinyan noted.
At the same time, he recalled that all these agreements should be confirmed and fixed. “But the good thing is that we will not have problems with financial opportunities,” Pashinyan added.
From Pashinyan's statements, we can conclude that Putin promised to allocate the necessary funds for the construction of this road.
Recall that the issue of building a section of the railway through Meghri was reached in December 2021 in Brussels. Armenia is to build a 45 km railway to connect Nakhchivan with Western Azerbaijan. According to the calculations of the Armenian side, $200 million is needed for this.-02D-
