Baku / 23.10.20 / Turan: After a 25-year break, the UN Security Council held discussions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict on September 29 and October 19.
Despite the adoption in 1993 by the UN Security Council of four resolutions Nos. 822, 853, 874 and 884 in connection with the occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan, discussions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict have not been held since then, reads the commentary to the aide to the President of Azerbaijan, Hikmet Hajiyev.
After discussions on October 19, the UN Security Council prepared a draft statement on behalf of the Security Council chair. However, in the draft, prepared mainly by France and Russia, there were no references to the mentioned UN Security Council resolutions. As you know, these resolutions condemned the Armenian aggression and required the withdrawal of Armenian forces from the territories of Azerbaijan.
During the discussions on October 19, non-permanent members of the UN Security Council and members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) - Indonesia, Niger, Tunisia, Vietnam, South Africa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Dominican Republic, breaking the silence procedure twice, insisted on the inclusion in the statement of a reference to the aforementioned UN Security Council resolutions.
Following the persistent and principled position of the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, the draft statement was officially withdrawn.
President Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude to Indonesia, Nigeria, Tunisia, Vietnam, South Africa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as the Dominican Republic for their fair and principled position.
Aliyev confirmed that, as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, he would continue to protect the interests of member states, international law and justice in the UN and other international organizations.
Addressing all NAM member states as chair of the Movement, President Ilham Aliyev called for solidarity, unity and mutual support based on the Bandung Principles. ”- 06D-
