ECHR Obliges Azerbaijani Government to Pay Compensation of 6,000 Euros to Journalist Khadija Ismayilova
Baku / 07.05.20 / Turan: On May 7, the European Court of Human Rights issued another decision in the case of journalist Khadija Ismayilova.
In 2014, she filed a complaint about a violation of privacy (Article 8) and a fair trial (Article 6) of the Human Rights Convention.
The court granted the journalist’s complaint and ordered the Azerbaijani government to pay her 6,000 euros in compensation for moral damage.
The court decision said that the case was related to publications in the pro-government media of Azerbaijan, denigrating the dignity of Ismayilova. Local courts dismissed her complaints of abuse in the media.
Recall that on December 5, 2014, Ismayilova was arrested on charges of tax evasion and illegal entrepreneurship. The court deprived her of freedom for 7.5 years.
In May 2016, the country's Supreme Court reduced the term of imprisonment to 3.5 years of conditional imprisonment with a 5-year probationary period and released her from prison. Later, this period was reduced to 2 years and three months. -16D-
