Erdogan Threatens to Refuse of Russian Gas

The Turkish President Erdogan said Ankara could reconsider the purchase of Russian gas because of the deterioration of its relations with Russia, which took place after the violation of the Turkish airspace /

"We are the number one buyer of Russian natural gas. Losing Turkey will be a serious loss for Russia. If necessary, Turkey may buy natural gas in different places," Reuters quotes the President of Turkey.

"We cannot accept the current situation. The Russian explanations about the airspace violations are unconvincing," he stressed.

Erdogan said Turkey may also reconsider the construction of the nuclear power plant Akkuyu on the Russian project. "If the Russians do not build Akkuyu NPP, someone else will come and build it," said Erdogan.

Turkey is the second largest buyer of Russian gas after Germany. In 2014, Turkey bought 27.33 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia.

Erdogan's statement comes amid strained relations between Ankara and Moscow because of violation of the Turkish airspace by Russian jets.

The Turkish authorities have twice in the last three days accused Moscow of violating the air borders. According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the Russian aircraft violated the airspace of Turkey on 3 and 4 October. In this regard, on October 5, the Russian Ambassador was handed a note of protest. On October 7 it became known that Turkey once again protested the violation of its airspace. -02D-
