EU to allocate additional €10 million to Azerbaijan for demining
The first meeting of demining experts from EU member states and the Azerbaijan Mine Action Agency (AMAA) has been held in Baku.
This initiative is part of the EU's wider activities to support humanitarian demining in Azerbaijan, the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan says.
The EU and its Member States are by far the largest international donor of mine clearance actions in Azerbaijan.
The launch of the "Team Europe" campaign in May this year is a vivid example of this.
Following a telephone conversation between European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on 4 April, the EU plans to provide additional financial assistance to Azerbaijan to help it deal with the problem.
During the continuation of the program in 2024-2025, an additional €10 million is expected to be allocated to Azerbaijan.
The 25 June meeting was the first in a series of events to promote the creation of the Center of Improvement to be managed by ANAMA.
The Center will have dedicated training, research and development facilities to focus on the use of the latest technologies.
To this end, the first workshop, co-organized with ANAMA under the European Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument (TAIEX), offered a platform for sharing best practices, lessons learned and innovations. Experts from Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina shared knowledge and years of experience in strategic planning, gender equality in mine action, victim assistance and more.
