European Court Starts Communication on Complaints of Group of Azerbaijani Citizens
Baku / 25.09.18 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has started communication on the cases of a number of Azerbaijani citizens. In particular, it is a complaint of the member of the Popular Front Party Turan Ibrahimov about his arrest for 7 days, member of the movement D18 Gadir Agakishiyev - about his arrest for 1 month, journalist Seymur Hazi - convicted for 5 years on charges of hooliganism, journalist Isolda Agayeva - detained on her return in Baku, and interrogated until morning in the Main Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The lawyer Fariz Namazli wrote about this on his page in Facebook. In addition, communication on the cases of the former manager of the President Akif Muradverdiyev began in connection with his arrest on charges of smuggling.
The ECHR also began to communicate in the case of the theologian Sardar Babayev, his lawyer Javad Javadov said. According to him, the complaint raised the issue of recognizing violations of his rights under the following articles of the European Convention on Human Rights: 3 (prohibition of torture); 5.1, 5.3, 5.4 (right to liberty and personal inviolability); 6.2 (presumption of innocence); 9 (freedom of conscience); 10 (freedom of expression); 11 (freedom of assembly); 14 (prohibition of discrimination).
Babayev was arrested on February 22, 2017 and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment under Article 168.1 (infringement of the rights of citizens under the pretext of performing religious rituals) of the Criminal Code. He was accused of illegally performing religious rites, as he was educated abroad. However, the defense indicated that the ban was introduced after he was educated abroad. On the other hand, many officials of the Caucasus Muslims Office also received religious education abroad. In addition, in May 2017, the restriction in the legislation was relaxed and now religious ceremonies are allowed for persons who have received education abroad with the consent of the Caucasus Muslims Department. -06D-
