Another figure in Gubad Ibadoglu case emerged

Baku/08.08.23/Turan: Turkey has detained and brought to Azerbaijan economist Fazil Gasymov, whom Turks accuse of links with the FETÖ network.

According to official data, Gasymov was detained due to the criminal case of economist Gubad Ibadoglu. Azerbaijan's law enforcement agencies confirm Gasymov's detention, but do not specify in which case.

"Fazil Gasymov, who was declared wanted in a criminal case, was detained by Interior Ministry officers and taken to Azerbaijan and handed over to the investigation," the Interior Ministry's press service said.

Gasymov's brother Nazim Gasymov told Turan that he was taken away from the house where he was living.

"For what reason he was detained, no information was provided. We learnt from social media that Fazil was brought to Baku. However, the reason for detention was not explained to our family and we cannot get information about him from state structures," Gasymov said.

According to him, Fazil Gasymov graduated from the "Caucasus" University (his activity was suspended on 16 January 2017), then he continued his education in Turkey, completing doctoral studies at Istanbul University.

"As far as I know, he worked in Mubariz Mansimov's company ("Palmali" shipping company, which is not loved by the Azerbaijani authorities - ed.)," Gasymov continued. "Fazil was a presidential scholarship student, he loves his homeland and the state very much," the brother said.

In turn, Gubad Ibadoglu's lawyer Bahruz Bayramov noted that so far no one has been brought to criminal responsibility in Azerbaijan for involvement in FETÖ (a network of educational organisations belonging to preacher Fatullah Gulen - personal enemy of President Erdogan - ed.).

"There is no article in the Azerbaijani Criminal Code punishing membership in FETÖ. The country's Parliament has also not recognised FETÖ as a terrorist organisation. Therefore, no one can be held responsible even if they have a connection with FETÖ,"the lawyer said. He added that he knows nothing about the prosecution of a man named Fazil Gasymov in Ibadoglu's case.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry said Ibadoglu was detained based on the testimony of Anar Aliyev, who was arrested for his involvement with FETÖ.

On 23 July, synchronously with Ibadoglu's detention, pro-government media in Azerbaijan with reference to the pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak reported on the detention in Baku of four people associated with FETO, among whom Anar Aliyev was mentioned.

In particular, it was reported that the following were detained: "one of the former leaders of FETO in Azerbaijan, Doirush Jafarov, responsible for the financial affairs of the organisation, Gumrakh Abdurakhmanov, the director of the Yurd centre, Ruslan Aliyev, and Anar Aliyev, responsible for organisational issues".

"It has been established that Jafarov, Abdurakhmanov and Aliyev have been promoting their ideas in FETO's educational centres in Azerbaijan for a long time and taking steps to attract young people to the organisation," Azerbaijan's pro-government press wrote.

The next day it became known that all three were arrested and, like Ibadoglu, were charged with manufacturing, acquisition or sale of counterfeit money (Article 204.3.1) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

Ruslan Aliyev, who was arrested, is a lecturer at the Baku Engineering University (established on the basis of the Caucasus University). -06В-
