Baku/31.03.23/Turan: The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement that marked 31 March as the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.

As a reminder, 105 years ago, in March-April of 1918, Dashnak-Bolshevik units acting under the Baku Council ruthlessly slaughtered tens of thousands of peaceful Azerbaijanis in Baku, Shamakha, Guba, Iravan, Zangezur, Karabakh, Nakhchivan and Kara regions.

Only in Guba more than 16.000 people were killed with special cruelty, 167 villages destroyed.

Note that extraordinary commissioner of the Caucasus, ethnic Armenian Stepan Shaumyan admitted that 6.000 armed soldiers of the Baku Council and 4.000 soldiers of "Dashnaksutun" Party took part in the annihilation of Azerbaijanis.

Later the government of the People's Republic of Azerbaijan set up an extraordinary investigation commission (EIC) to investigate these grave crimes.

Composed of the best jurists of the time of different nationalities, including Russians, Jews, Poles, Georgians and even Armenians, the commission initiated criminal cases against 194 people accused of committing various crimes against civilians based on evidence. In the process, more than 100 people were arrested. However, the process was halted because of the occupation of Azerbaijan by the Soviet army.

Only on March 26, 1998, the decree of the President of Azerbaijan "On the Genocide of the Azerbaijanis" gave an adequate political assessment of those criminal actions, and March 31 was declared the Day of Genocide of the Azerbaijanis.

Establishment of the Genocide Day plays important role in providing information to the world community on the ethnic cleansing committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis.

Modern Armenia has pursued a policy of ethnic cleansing, genocide and other crimes against Azerbaijanis based on ethnic hatred and intolerance for nearly 30 years, as a result of which Azerbaijanis were massively expelled from Armenia and the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

"On the 105th anniversary of the March massacre, we recall with deep sorrow the innocent victims of genocide, racial discrimination and ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijanis, and call on Armenia to end impunity and prevent repetition of such crimes," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement. -06В-
