Fwd: U.S. To Announce New Military Aid For Ukraine — State Dept
Washington D.C./09.08.23/Turan: The Biden administration is set to announce a new military aid package for Ukraine as soon as this week, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told TURAN's Washington correspondent during Tuesday's briefing.
"As we've said before, we continue to supply Ukraine with artillery, with a whole host of weapons," Miller said. "We have other announcements coming later this week about additional assistance that we plan to provide to Ukraine."
As TURAN has learned from diplomatic sources, the next package of military aid for Ukraine will include additional artillery, Javelins, Patriot munitions, tactical vehicles, and other ammunition.
Miller also said that the U.S. was considering the transfer of new missiles and defense systems to Ukraine. The spokesperson didn't however clarify whether these new systems include ATACMS, long-range missile systems that Kyiv has requested from the U.S.
The new package comes amid Russia's increasing heavy shelling on residential areas in Eastern Ukraine, including the most recent strikes in Pokrovsk, which killed at least 9 people, injured dozens.
When asked by TURAN whether this was how the Russians responded to the peace summit that happened over the weekend, Miller saif, he 'wouldn’t want' to draw any specific parallel, because "we’ve seen the Russians target civilian infrastructure and homes and apartment buildings and schools and hospitals going back for some time. So they do that; they have done that consistently since the beginning of the war."
In the meantime, he added that the latest attacks are "a reflection, as all of their attacks on Ukraine – their continued attacks on Ukraine, on civilian infrastructure, and their attacks on grain facilities are a reflection of Russia’s refusal to engage in real peace negotiations. "

In a case that is disappointing but not surprising, the agreement between the government of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for hosting the climate conference COP29, is replete with significant shortcomings and ambiguities on the protections for participants’ rights. Human Rights Watch has obtained a copy of this host country agreement, signed in August 2024, which has yet to be made public.
