U.S. 'Welcomes' Türkiye's Efforts to Push Russia to Return To Grain Deal

Washington D.C./09.08.23/Turan: The United States said on Tuesday that it supports Türkiye's efforts to resume the Ukraine grain deal, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.

Türkiye was "very constructive obviously, in helping reach that deal for that initiative in the first place and helpful in convincing Russia to continue with the initiative, "State Department spokesperson Matt Miller told a daily briefing when responding to TURAN's questions. "They continue to play a productive role. We think it's useful that they play that role," he added.

Last month, Russia suspended its participation in the deal, which it had signed in July 2022 along with Türkiye, the U.N., and Ukraine to resume grain exports from Ukrainian Black Sea ports which were paused after the Russia-Ukraine war began in February of that year.

TURAN also asked Miller about a forthcoming visit by Russia's Putin to Türkiye in August. "I don’t have any comment on a potential visit other than we do support Türkiye continuing to press Russia to re-enter that initiative because it’s so important," Matthew said.
