Ganja Airborne Division Returns to Azerbaijan
Baku / 10.11.20 / Turan: The Russian peacekeeping contingent sent to Azerbaijan to implement the Armenian-Russian-Azerbaijani peace agreement consists of servicemen of the 31st airborne brigade of the RF Armed Forces, which has “Azerbaijani” roots.
The brigade was formed on the basis of the 104th Guards Airborne Division, which was based in Ganja, and in February 1993 was redeployed to the city of Ulyanovsk.
By May 1, 1998, the division was reorganized into the 31st separate airborne brigade, and from December 1, 2006, it was renamed the 31st separate guards airborne assault brigade.
Since 2013, the unit has been part of the Collective Security Treaty Organization's Rapid Reaction Force, ensuring peace between the conflicting parties in areas of responsibility. The paratroopers have experience of such missions from the time they were based in Kirovabad (Ganja), as well as from service in Bosnia, when they had to accompany humanitarian convoys in Sarajevo. Now this line of their activity is the main one. —0-
