Georgia may be admitted to NATO, Crimea will become part of Russia
Georgia may be admitted to NATO if Russia annexes the Crimea, writes Moscow's "Kommersant" , citing sources in the leadership of NATO and the U.S. State Department.
Russia's actions in Ukraine caused a renewed debate about the need for a more resolute policy of the alliance in the post-soviet space, NATO headquarters believes.
Even the countries that recently urged not to force the issue about Georgia's membership, now think about it. Tbilisi has reiterated its desire to be integrated into a military bloc, said the State Department.
Everything now depends on the outcome of Sunday's referendum. If the Crimea will become part of Russia, at the next NATO summit ( it will be in the UK in September) Georgia can provide an action plan for membership in the alliance. This is a list of conditions in the political, military , economic and legal spheres , after which the country will become a full member of the organization. Similar conditions for joining the alliance now fulfill Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia. It is likely that the next member of NATO will be Ukraine. -02D-
