Greek citizens rush to Karabakh to fight on the side of Armenia
Baku / 21.10.20 / Turan: About 100 Greek citizens, ethnic Armenians expressed their readiness to go to Karabakh to participate in hostilities on the side of Armenia. Recording of volunteers is being conducted at the Hayastan social and cultural center in Athens, European media reported, citing Agence France-Presse.
“My family and relatives send money, donations, but for me the biggest help I can bring is to be at the front,” says 30-year-old Greek-Armenian Yakovos Stamatiadis.
Among the volunteers, there are also ethnic Greeks who have nothing to do with Armenia, the Hayastan center notes.
“Greeks and Armenians have a very strong relationship. They are two peoples who share a history with a common memory marked by persecution in the Ottoman Empire,” says Panayota Manoli, professor of international relations at the University of the Peloponnese.
These populations have developed strong ties and the Armenian community of Greece, with a population of 80,000, finds support in Greece. The common enemy in the person of Turkey is the driving force for many Greeks and Armenians, she said. —06D-
