Human rights activist Namizad Safarov approved as presidential candidate
Baku/30.12.23/Turan: On December 30, the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan approved self-nominated human rights activist Namizad Safarov as a presidential candidate.
Thus, the number of approved candidates was 16.
At the same time, one of the contenders, the current head of state Ilham Aliyev, was already officially registered as a candidate on December 30.
According to the Electoral Code, after approval by the CEC, applicants must collect 40 thousand voter signatures to register as a candidate and participate in the election campaign.
Safarov is known for his opposition views. He has a higher legal education and previously worked in investigative agencies. Since the early 1990s. He was engaged in advocacy and participated in the defense of political cases.
Several years ago, he was expelled from the bar along with a number of other well-known human rights lawyers. Safarov was a member of the Committee against torture and repression.
On social networks and the media he has repeatedly condemned cases of human rights violations, corruption, arbitrariness of officials and security forces.—06B-
