Human rights defenders of Azerbaijan defende activists arrested in Iran
Baku/14.10.21/Turan: About dozens of human rights organizations in Azerbaijan sent appeals to the UN Human Rights Committee and Amnesty International with a call to protect the rights of arrested Azerbaijanis in Iran.
NGOs, members of the Working Group on Human Rights, express concern about the fate of ethnic Azerbaijanis recently arrested in Iran and draw the attention of the UN and Amnesty International to this.
The appeal noted that the victory of Azerbaijan in the Second Karabakh War aroused sympathy of ethnic Azerbaijanis living in Iran. On this occasion, in September last year, a rally was held in the city of Ardabil, the participants of which protested against the fact that official Tehran provides all-round assistance to Armenia.
Twelve protesters were arrested by the security forces, and on October 9 this year they were sentenced to a total of 180 months and 72 blows with rods.
Similar actions took place in other cities of southern Iran, including the capital Tehran, where activists were arrested.
“We, the human rights defenders of Azerbaijan, strongly condemn the repressions against the protesters in Iran, their arrests and demand their immediate release,” the appeal says. -05D-
