Ilgar Mamedov could be Imprisoned for 12 Years

New, more serious charges have been brought against arrested leader of the Real Movement, Ilgar Mamedov.

According to his lawyer, Fuad Agayev,  Mamedov was acquitted under Article 233 (organization of public disorder), and now accused of Article 220 (organization of disorder.) This charge holds an imprisonment term of four to 12 years.

“By such steps in power, in a year of presidential elections, authorities demonstrate that they can condemn any opposition on trumped up charges", said the lawyer.

Ilgar Mamedov is accused of organizing riots on January 23-24 in Ismailly region.  On February 4, Nasimi district court arrested him for two months; his detention term was later extended.  Mamedov is recognized by international organizations as prisoner of conscience. The European Court of Human Rights began considering his case on April 9 of this year, and will wait for answers from the government of Azerbaijan till June 18.

Recall that a few days ago; the more serious charge under the Article 220 was put forth against another opposition leader, Tofik Yagublu, who was arrested on Ismayilli events. -03B-
