Ilham Aliyev: European leaders have never criticized us
The Council of Europe has anti-Azerbaijani group acting for many years, said President Ilham Aliyev.
"The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has the Armenian lobby, as well as members occupying biased positions against Azerbaijan," said Aliyev, speaking yesterday at a meeting of heads of the diplomatic service.
However, Aliyev called a "great victory" of Azerbaijan failure of the report on political prisoners in Azerbaijan by Christoph Strasser. Therefore we should continue to work actively in the Council of Europe, he said.
"I know that a smear campaign has been held recently against us, which of course, saddened and concerned the Azerbaijani society. Information coming to me raises the question why we should not respond to the blatant injustice. We respond.
Why do we still maintain our European policy including foreign policy priorities? I always say that we should go constantly to the goal. I believe it is wrong, if we were to pay attention to those who try to hinder us, because, in fact, today we have very strong and healthy bilateral relations with European countries," said Aliyev.
However, he stressed that bilaterally he never heard any criticism from European leaders.
"Some people, who call themselves the opposition or human rights activists here, believe that someone says something to us, and we will fulfill it. They are naive people. To put it mildly, either they are really naive or just want to create such an opinion. During these 11 years, European leaders bilaterally never spoke a word to me in connection with our internal policies. Today I first say this. Of course, international organizations must say that because it is their political life.
Of course, we have to respond and fully respond to every unfounded accusation. Our diplomats also need to always keep an eye on this in the countries where they work, to respond to unfounded accusations from non-governmental organizations in the media," said Aliyev.
He also called for interaction of Azerbaijan’s embassies and the Diaspora organizations.
"Diaspora organizations should rally around our embassies. They should not argue among themselves and their activities should not harm the country," said Aliyev. -06D-
