Iranian authorities finally start investigating attack on Azerbaijani Embassy
Baku/04.07.23/Turan: In the case of an armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran there is still one suspect. A representative of the judicial system and justice of the Islamic Republic Masoud Satayshi told the Iranian media.
He called the incident an "unexpected and bitter incident". "Therefore, the country's judicial, political and security agencies have always stressed that the main perpetrator of the attack or others involved should be dealt with firmly and lawfully. After extensive investigations, it was stressed that various aspects of the case should be clarified and the case should lead to a conviction with the cooperation of the Azerbaijani government. The case still involves the same accused," Satayshi said.
His statement was made on the eve of the visit to Azerbaijan by Iranian Foreign Minister Husein Amir Abdollahian, who will attend the July 5-6 Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku.
The attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy was carried out by a gunman on 27 January.
He killed one guard and wounded another. A third guard managed to push him out of the Embassy building, after which he continued to threaten the mission and its staff. All the while, the local police officer and other Iranian law enforcers failed to act and did not apprehend the perpetrator of the Embassy attack until half an hour later.
The detainee turned out to be 50-year-old Iranian citizen Yassin Huseinzadeh.
The police allowed the attacker to give interviews outside the Embassy and explain the motives of the crime as "family and personal problems" and the alleged fact that his wife, an Azerbaijani citizen, was "hidden" in the Embassy.
Azerbaijan described the attack on the Embassy as a terrorist attack and demanded a comprehensive investigation.
Note that Baku has evacuated all Embassy personnel and called the identification and punishment of all those involved in the attack as precondition for resuming the work of the diplomatic mission.
Iranian authorities have so far remained silent about the progress of the investigation. -06В-
