Israeli President's visit to Baku
Baku/30.05.23/Turan: Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrived in Baku on Tuesday morning for a two-day official visit.
The visit takes place amid heightened security measures due to possible provocations by Iran.
"Iran is Azerbaijan's neighbour and is a destabilising force in the region, seeking to undermine Israel's relations with other countries," Herzog said at Ben-Gurion Airport before flying to Baku. He called Azerbaijan "a friendly state with many areas of cooperation".
According to the Israeli side, Azerbaijani security forces and the Israel Security Agency (Shabak) have closed entire areas of Baku for the duration of Herzog's visit. A large number of police officers patrol the capital.
A "Jerusalem Post" correspondent reports that all members of the delegation are forbidden to connect their phones to local cellular carriers and to separate from the group during the visit.
Immediately after arriving, Herzog headed for a meeting with President Aliyev. This was followed by talks between the delegations of the two countries.
President Aliyev expressed his satisfaction in receiving President Herzog and emphasized the positive impact the visit would have on the friendly relations between their countries. They discussed various bilateral and regional issues, with President Aliyev highlighting the potential for further cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, and security.
President Herzog thanked President Aliyev for the invitation and expressed his honor and pleasure to be in Azerbaijan. He emphasized the strong partnership between Israel and Azerbaijan, which serves as a symbol of collaboration between Jews and Muslims for the greater good. President Herzog also acknowledged the strategic significance of their relationship in promoting peace, prosperity, and development in the region. He extended an invitation for President Aliyev to visit Israel in the future.
In the afternoon Aliyev and Herzog will have lunch together with their spouses at the residence of the President of Azerbaijan. In the evening there will be a solemn event devoted to the 75th anniversary of independence of Israel.
Following the talks between the delegations, the Health Ministers of the two countries will sign an agreement on cooperation in the field of training doctors and organising digital health.
Herzog will also hold a meeting with members of Azerbaijan's Jewish community. -02D-
