New opportunities are opening up in energy cooperation, he continued. “For many years, Azerbaijan has been a reliable source of oil and the number one source for oil supplies to Italy. Now, with the completion of the Southern Gas Corridor project, we have become an important gas supplier and the third largest gas supplier. If there is potential to move forward, of course we will. I was also very pleased that last year we supplied 7 billion cubic meters of gas, and this year there will be even more,” Aliyev further noted.
He also expressed satisfaction with "the active participation of Italian companies in the restoration of the liberated territories." On the topic of gas Di Maio noted the following.
“You mentioned TAP (Trans-Andria Gas Pipeline). This project demonstrates the importance of developing economic ties in this particular period – the period of peace.”
At a briefing after a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Di Maio noted that anti-Russian sanctions had an impact on the energy situation in Europe.
“Anti-Russian sanctions affect not only Italy, but all European countries in the energy sector. And in this context, we pay great attention to cooperation with our reliable partners with great potential in this area. Italy already wants to free itself from energy dependence on Russia. Azerbaijan is one of the main priority partners. We have ties with Azerbaijan not only in the energy sector. Today our relations with Baku are at a high level. Today Azerbaijan is one of the main partners of Italy,” Di Maio said.
The first meeting of the Azerbaijan-Italy Strategic Dialogue was held today with the participation of the foreign ministers of the two countries. The ceremony of laying the foundation of the Azerbaijan-Italy University will also take place today. It is planned to open an Azerbaijani cultural center in Italy. -06B-
